One of the Best Transformers Episodes Parodied a Zombie Movie Classic

“Transformers: Prime,” a standout series in the Transformers franchise, is well-known for its engaging stories and complex characters. However, one episode stands out for its unique blend of sci-fi and horror. Titled “Predatory,” this episode cleverly parodied classic zombie movie tropes, giving fans a refreshing and eerie take on the Transformers universe.

In this episode, the Autobots and Decepticons are forced to deal with a terrifying new threat when the Insecticons, a group of cybernetic creatures, become infected by a mysterious substance. The result is the creation of robotic zombies—an eerie combination of mechanical bodies with insatiable, mindless hunger. This plot device nods to the classic zombie genre, where the undead relentlessly pursue the living, turning the familiar Transformers world into a terrifying, apocalyptic nightmare.

The influence of classic zombie films like Night of the Living Dead and 28 Days Later is clear in the Predatory episode, with its slow-building tension, dark atmosphere, and sense of inevitable doom. The Autobots, usually the defenders of peace, must now fight for their survival as they battle not only the Insecticons but also the infected Autobots who have been turned into zombie-like creatures. The episode cleverly combines traditional Transformers action with the foreboding dread of a zombie outbreak, offering a fresh perspective on the series.

This unique episode shows how Transformers can evolve and experiment with different genres while still staying true to its core. It’s a fine example of how animated series can parody or pay homage to genre conventions, bringing new twists to old themes. The episode also illustrates the flexibility of the Transformers universe, where anything is possible—from robot animals in Beast Wars to miniature Transformers in Armada.

Transformers: Prime has been praised for its deep storytelling and mature themes, and Predatory highlights the series’ ability to surprise fans with its creativity. The episode not only adds a chilling twist to the ongoing Transformers saga but also serves as a love letter to zombie movie fans, blending action, horror, and the iconic transformation of the Autobots and Decepticons. In the end, Predatory proves that the Transformers universe is always ripe for reinvention, making it one of the best episodes of the series.

Robot zombies? It could happen, and often did in “Transformers: Prime.”

Since “Transformers” has been remade so many times over the past 40 years, new cartoons will sometimes use a central gimmick to set themselves apart from the crowd. “Beast Wars” had robots that transformed into animals instead of vehicles. The 2003 anime series “Transformers: Armada” cashed in on the “Pokémon” craze and had the Autobots and Decepticons fighting over “Mini-Cons,” human-sized Transformers that could unlock great powers in the larger ones.
