Stephen Curry Invests $4.7 Million to Open Shelter for Homeless Youth in San Francisco
Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has once again demonstrated his commitment to community upliftment, this time through a $4.7 million investment to transform a residential property in San Francisco into a shelter for homeless youth. The project reflects Curry’s dedication to addressing one of the Bay Area’s most pressing issues—youth homelessness.
The shelter, located in the Haight-Ashbury district, will serve individuals aged 18 to 24 who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk. Curry’s investment will fund renovations to convert the property into a safe, supportive space where vulnerable young people can access not just housing, but also a range of critical services. These will include mental health counseling, educational resources, job training programs, and life skills workshops aimed at empowering residents toward long-term stability and independence.
This initiative is the latest in a series of philanthropic efforts from Curry and his wife Ayesha through their Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation. The foundation, which focuses on providing underserved children and families with access to nutritious food, quality education, and safe spaces to play, has already made a major impact in the Oakland area and beyond. With this new shelter, the Currys are expanding their outreach to address the broader issue of homelessness among Bay Area youth.
San Francisco has long struggled with homelessness, and despite city initiatives like the “Rising Up” program—which aimed to cut youth homelessness in half—the problem persists. High living costs, limited affordable housing, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have made it difficult for many young people to find stability. Curry’s investment aims to fill this gap by offering both emergency shelter and pathways to self-sufficiency.
Curry has been involved in related efforts before. In 2016, he donated his MVP award SUV to Covenant House, a nonprofit supporting homeless youth in Oakland. The vehicle was later used to deliver food and essential supplies to those in need.
Curry hopes the shelter will not only provide immediate relief but also serve as a model for future projects. “We want this to be more than just a place to sleep,” Curry said in a statement. “We want to offer young people the tools, community, and support they need to rewrite their futures.”
As the shelter prepares to open its doors, Curry’s initiative stands as a powerful example of how sports figures can use their influence and resources to bring about meaningful, lasting change in their communities.
