Celtics Rule Out $134 Million Trade for Orlando Magic Star
The Boston Celtics have officially ruled out a potential $134 million trade deal for Orlando Magic star, Paolo Banchero, according to multiple sources close to the franchise. Banchero, the 2022 NBA Rookie of the Year, had become a prominent name in trade rumors following speculation that the Celtics were looking to add more star power to their already talented roster. However, after internal discussions and a review of the team’s long-term plans, Boston has decided to abandon any potential pursuit of the 21-year-old forward.
The Celtics, led by head coach Joe Mazzulla, are currently focused on building a championship-contending team around established stars like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Despite Banchero’s rising star power and impressive performances in his first two seasons with the Magic, the Celtics are reportedly prioritizing flexibility and continuity within their roster rather than making significant moves that could disrupt their core.
Sources indicate that Boston had explored the possibility of acquiring Banchero in a trade that would have involved multiple first-round draft picks and some of their own younger assets, including Robert Williams III and Malcolm Brogdon. He averaged 20.0 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in his rookie campaign, quickly becoming the cornerstone of the Magic’s rebuilding efforts. His versatility as a scorer and playmaker, along with his 6-foot-10 frame, makes him a future star in the league. Despite his youth, Banchero’s ability to contribute in various aspects of the game has drawn interest from multiple teams, including the Celtics.
However, Celtics president of basketball operations, Brad Stevens, has repeatedly stated that the team’s strategy is to continue developing their young core and avoid any major changes unless the opportunity is right. With the Celtics already boasting one of the deepest and most talented rosters in the NBA, adding a player like Banchero could have created complications with team chemistry, especially when balancing the team’s financial future.
